With Resident Evil 2 (2019), speedrunning has become more accessible than ever for Resident Evil fans. Speedrunning Resident Evil before has always been a struggle, learning the routes and optimizing is tough on the older games. With REmake2, new players can strive for faster times easier than ever before.
REmake 2‘s zombies may seem hard at first but can be easily avoided with a little practice. The zombie’s body parts have individual health pools, allowing you to dismember a leg and make them crawl. Doing this saves ammo and time, and allows you to evade most zombies early on.
Ammo consumption is something to be aware of while speedrunning. While speedrunning Leon A, try to make as much shotgun ammo as possible. Shotgun ammo is made by mixing white and black gunpowder. The shotgun is your best friend in speedruns. It allows you to one-shot zombies because of it’s high critical chance when shooting at their head.
When exploring the RPD you may be tempted to pick up an extra item here and there. Try to break away from this habit. Since you are going for the shortest time possible, be as stingy as possible. When I run, I ignore lots of ammo and even some extra side packs and upgrades. I ignore both upgrades for the Matilda and the stock upgrade for the shotgun. The benefits of those items do not outweigh the time lost retrieving them. I also ignore picking up the Magnum because it is a massive time loss and not necessary for beating the game.
Work on boss fights as many times as possible. Each boss has a quick strategy, but it’s not as easy as watching it once and doing it. Practicing the fights and learning the reads for their attacks is key. The second Birkin fight had me for a while until I found out you can use 400 chemical thrower fuel to down him twice. Then use the crane once and kill him in one crane hit instead of two. That was an amazing time saver when I first started running REmake2.
Speedrunning is all about optimization and finding out what works for you. It’s also a fun way to improve your skills and show how dedicated to a game you are. Always explore different routes and options for your runs. You never know if you’re going to find the one trick to get you a world record. As always have fun and happy running!
