Earlier this year Capcom breathed new life into the Resident Evil community with the Resident Evil 2 remake, and the community is back as strong as ever. Now the question on everyone’s mind is, When will we get RE3: Nemesis?
Now while Capcom is still hushed on its potential development or possibilities, the RE community has yet again stepped up to fill in the void while we wait.
The team that brought us the Resident Evil 2 Seamless HD Project is back again with the Resident Evil 3. This mod adds HD textures to the game, upscales the FMV cutscenes, restores the in-game text quality, completely reworked backgrounds, upscaled menus WITH high-resolution character portraits, and even a few new character models! The team also used custom tools to prevent seams where the masks are imposed on top of the backgrounds (hence its namesake, Seamless HD project).
This is the unofficial remaster RE fans have been waiting for.
Now I know what your thinking… “How do I get this?”
Resident Evil 3 Seamless HD is a free mod available from their team’s website and is ready for download to play right now! Do note that this isn’t the full game, so there still is a little work to do to get set up.
The mod relies on the Gamecube port of RE3, so you guessed it, you’re going to need an ISO and an emulator. Fortunately, the team has provided a custom version of the Dolphin emulator in the download to set up for running the game. However, for legal reasons, it’s up to you to get the ISO and other game files. (Disclaimer: we know you’re all good law abiding people with LEGITIMATE copies of RE3, so we won’t be including ISO download links.)
Now once you have the file from their website downloaded all you need to do is all is to extract the Zip file, open Dolphin.exe, select the folder containing your game ISO, configure your controller, and PLAY! Note: The mod is primarily for the NTSC version, but PAL players can still enjoy the game by renaming the file “dolphin_path\User\Load\Textures\GLEE08” to “GLEP08”.
Another cool addition is that you can toggle the mod on and off while playing using the DELETE key, similar to 2011’s Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary where you could swap between looks in game.
Here at Biohazard Declassified, we were all very impressed with RE2SHDP and their newest venture of bringing RE3 into the high def world is no different. It is beautifully crafted and another amazing example of what AI upscaling is capable of achieving. We can’t wait to see more from this team, especially considering on their website there’s a hint that the original Resident Evil could be in the works in the future.
While we probably won’t receive any official word on an official RE3 remake this year, unless TGS is a surprise, this is a must play for fans of the series. If you haven’t already, download and play today!
