As far back as January, we here at Biohazard Declassified have been attempting to gather any information we can about Resident Evil Village, from its original existence to the slightest details.
To do a bit of self-assessment, I’m going to compare what our original information stated versus what came out in the recent reveal.
To do this, I’ll have two paragraphs on each subject. The Rumor paragraph will be what we originally wrote, pulled directly from the original article verbatim. The Official paragraph will be the final word that we’ve gotten from Capcom through either the trailer or the developer message.
The articles I’ll be using are “Possible Information on Resident Evil 8” (January), “More Resident Evil 8 Info Allegedly Surfaces” (February), and “New Rumors Arise About Resident Evil 8” (April). I’ll notate them as , , and , respectively.
Rumor: “To start, it seems likely that 8 will have a subtitle, this time Village. At the least, this is the working title. Given the formatting for 7, it’ll likely be this way so as to highlight the VIII for a Roman numeral 8. So the “clever title” part we were first told about seems to fit with this.”
Official: It should be well known by now, but this rumor was proven true beyond a doubt. In fact, in offical material, Resident Evil Village seems to be the running title, though it highlights the VIII, as mentioned.
Rumor: “There are also wolf-like creatures that will attack the player in certain areas.”
Official: Though the true nature of the enemies showcased early on in the trailer is unknown, the appearance of werewolf-like beastmen lends credence to our original rumor. They behave much like werewolves, and seem to only be present in an outdoor setting.
Rumor: “There is a persistent shadowy ‘female’ enemy that will follow you but will dissipate if shot.”
“one or more witches will be hunting Ethan”
“The nature and origin of this witch remain to be seen, but what the leaks CAN tell us is that the witch will be similar to Marguerite: she operates with insects. When defeated, she even dissipates into them and as reported in our original leak article, she is known to ‘haunt’ the player in the demo and has a distinctive ‘laugh’.”
Official: The characters in question are not officially referred to as witches. However, we certainly see 4 female characters who give a certain “coven” vibe. In the trailer, one seems to dissipate into insects, though whether it’s upon defeat or a means of normal teleportation is unclear.
It should also be noted that these 4 characters give off just as much of a “vampire” vibe as they do a “witch” one. Earlier in the trailer, there’s also an old woman shown who may have been the witch originally spoken of.
- Gameplay starts in a village leading up to a castle.
- The environment will be rural, snowy, and mountainous; possibly Europe.
- castle, but it’s smaller than the one from RE4
- medieval setting and enemy designs
Official: The Resident Evil Village trailer quite clearly showcases the village of the name, nestled in the mountains at the foot of a castle.
As for the medieval setting, it’s possible there were crossed wires on that one, but it clearly is modern times. Without seeing more enemy designs, it’s unclear what about the game would be called medieval, aside from having a castle.
Rumor: “Also, it seems that Capcom is playing with the concept of inventory management again. The email suggests that they are testing both a Resident Evil 7 style UI alongside a Resident Evil 4 style. Which is interesting to note considering all the buzz about a Resident Evil 4 remake. Maybe it is likely as well?”
Official: In the developer message that released post-trailer, Capcom showcased a sneek peak of the inventory system. In it, the UI resembles Resident Evil 7 fairly closely, but the mechanics themselves are based around arrangement and size, just like in Resident Evil 4. It even has the outline of an attache case, and a currency system.
What that means for a potential remake remains to be seen.
Rumor: “Ethan will be returning as a playable character. (…) Chris Redfield will also be returning in some capacity.”
“Chris returning is intriguing as well seeing as we would possibly see more of his involvement with Blue Umbrella and possibly their true intentions.”
“Chris returns, but with a twist!”
“The end of the video shows ‘Chris’ shooting ‘Ethan’. Now I’m personally intrigued by this because I’d previously speculated about Chris returning as a ‘bad’ guy. Could this possibly be a big plot point Resident Evil 8?”
“According to the leak, Chris will be playing an integral part in 8. He appears in flashbacks surrounding Ethan, Mia, and apparently their baby. What this baby has to do with the narrative is as of yet unclear. That being said, Chris doesn’t seem to be looking very heroic this time around. It appears that in a flashback sequence Chris can be seen shooting one of them while breaking into their home.”
“So has Chris gone deep cover, or has all of the years staring into the abyss finally caught up with him?”
“He also apparently looks a bit different, trying to bridge the gap between the original, burly Chris and the newer, slimmer one.”
Official: The return of Ethan is made clear, as Capcom documentation states him by name, as well as Chris saying his name directly.
Chris’s return also is clear, his name being stated as well. His potentially villainous nature for this installment, his invasion of Ethan’s home, and his killing of someone are also all demonstrated in the trailer.
However, our earliest rumors indicated that he shot Ethan during the home invasion, which clearly isn’t the case. Unless there’s something we don’t know about yet, then it’s possible that things changed. It’s unlikely that the rumor was outright a lie, since it’s so close to what’s shown.
Rumor: “The game will be in First-person like RE7.”
“Also as of this time it appears the first-person perspective will be returning.”
Official: The trailer clearly demonstrates the first person perspective on its own. However, offical documentation also backs this up, saying in no uncertain terms that there game is through Ethan’s eyes.
So how did we do? Let us know in the comments below!
